Hemp can be a highly beneficial source of nutrition for poultry of all types - chickens, quail, turkeys, ducks, geese and guineafowl. Even caged birds like parrots can benefit from hemp seed meal!
Though hemp seed meal alone can provide a laying hen with all the nutritional requirements she needs for healthy living, it is best mixed into a feed ration at around 1/3 hemp, for the best results.
Hemp provides a whole range of benefits for poultry of all types. Some benefits include:
• Encourages laying. Hemp seed meal is a valuable source of high protein, and protein is what a hen (of any species) needs for egg production. Especially in those times when laying is decreased, adding hemp can encourage your hens to continue laying a little longer, and may also give point of lays a little boost to begin their laying season.
• Vitamins & Minerals. While many other forms of livestock have an array of mineral supplements available, poultry rarely are included. Just like any other animal, poultry require essential vitamins and minerals to be healthy, and hemp provides a whole range of those much needed nutrient requirements.
• Helps feather growth. Again, back to our wonderful protein content! The high concentration of protein helps birds regrow feathers during moulting time, or to repair and regenerate after feather loss from lice or mite damage. Feathers are made from the same substance as hair, nails and hooves - a compound known as “keratin.” Keratin formation relies heavily on protein, so hemp seed meal is a great source of that to help your birds regain their glossy plumage!
• Supports growth and development. For meat birds, healthy growth is an essential component of life. Hemp seed meal provides birds at all life stages with crucial nutrition their bodies need. Hemp seed meal can be used as a chick starter, a grower ration, or an addition to a layer or finisher feed to boost development and enhance growth, in a natural and healthy way.
